Buckeye Council Approves Town Manager Move to Assistant Town Manager Post, Hires Veteran Municipal Leader as Interim Town Manager
The Town of Buckeye Town Council Tuesday night approved Town Manager Jeanine Guy’s move to the assistant town manager position and hired Stephen Cleveland, a 35-year veteran of public leadership, as interim town manager.
Mayor Jackie Meck said the town is grateful for Guy’s service, who accomplished many good things for the town during very difficult times.
“Jeanine reduced the cost of government without reducing service levels,” Meck said. “The town will benefit from her continued participation and institutional knowledge in this transitional time.”
Meck continued that Buckeye is very fortunate to have Cleveland as interim town manager.
“Stephen is recognized throughout Arizona for building strong staff teams and forging local and regional public and private partnerships,” Meck said. “We have found a manager with 20 years’ experience and with experience in the west Valley.
“He is able to step right in and prepare us for the next level. He is a key component to ensure a smooth transition and will serve until the town is able to recruit and select a new town manager.”
Cleveland retired from the City of Goodyear and established Cleveland Management Consulting in 2007.
“I look forward to working with the Town Council and staff to address current economic conditions and build on their efforts to provide the best possible services,” Cleveland said.
“The Town of Buckeye is excited about the opportunity to work with a proven leader and administrator to build a great team of policy makers, staff and community members to shape the future development of our town and invest the tax dollars entrusted to us wisely,” Meck said.
“We want to be recognized as a quality sustainable community attracting the jobs, services and amenities needed for current and future residents.”
Starting in 1983, Cleveland was assistant city manager in Goodyear and served as city manager from 1989 through 2007. The Arizona City County Management Association recognized his profound commitment to public service when it awarded Cleveland the Jack DeBolski Professional Excellence and Life Member Awards.
He is active in local, regional and state affairs involving water, leadership training programs, Rotary Club and support for Luke Air Force Base.
