Back to School Safety Tips

Post Date:07/31/2018 10:07 am

School starts on Aug. 6th for most schools in Buckeye. Your child’s safety is our biggest priority and Buckeye has taken many precautions to ensure their safety as they travel to and from school each day, but we still need your help.

Please watch this video from Police Chief Larry Hall and share these helpful tips from the Buckeye Police Department with your family to keep everyone safe throughout the school year.

  • Whether you walk or bike to school, always stay on the sidewalk
  • Always use the crosswalk when crossing the street
    • Walk your bicycle across the street
  • Listen and follow the crossing guard’s directions
  • Never walk between parked cars – someone might not see you

Motorists

  • Slow down
  • Expect the unexpected, especially on neighborhood streets and school zones
  • Be alert and watch for children and riding their bike
  • Stop your car when lights are flashing on a school bus
    • Wait until the lights stop flashing before you start driving again
  • Drivers on both sides of the street must stop when they see school bus lights flashing
    • The only exception to this is if there is a median of dirt, grass or a barrier
    • Drivers traveling in the opposite direction must slow down and use caution
    • Drivers traveling behind the school bus must stop and wait for the flashing lights to stop

Other Helpful Tips

  • Remember to not block crosswalks with your car
  • Follow the crossing guard’s instructions and always stop when directed to do so
  • Stay alert – children are the least predictable pedestrians and the most difficult to see
  • When you stop for a school bus, there must be a minimum of 10 feet between your car and the bus
  • Never pass a school bus on the right
  • Be polite – honking your horn and revving your engine can scare a child, causing them to rush in front of another car
  • Plan ahead so you have enough time to drop off your child and get to work
  • Make sure your child is restrained properly in their safety seat
  • All passengers must wear a seat belt – it’s the law
