Buckeye, AZ (July 25, 2024): From getting to and from class safely to reporting issues that may put students and staff at risk, Buckeye police are sharing these back-to-school tips for another safe and successful school year.
Traffic Safety
- Slow down in school zones and obey traffic lights, signs and crossing guards
- Avoid distractions behind the wheel
- Watch for kids walking and biking to campus
- Stop when a school bus has its stop sign displayed and lights flashing. You could face a $250 fine if you fail to do so.
- Do not stop in the street for student pick up or drop off
Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety
- For students walking or biking to class for the first time, practice routes before school starts
- Use the buddy system when possible
- Wear proper safety gear including helmets for riding bikes and scooters plus lights and reflectors on backpacks so you are visible day and night
- Cyclists must obey traffic signs and lights, riding with the flow of traffic
- Cross at crosswalks and traffic lights, always looking both ways first
Reporting safety concerns
- Seek out a teacher, staff member or school resource officer to report issues with bullying, social media, substance abuse or potential school threats
- Become familiar with school communications systems for reporting student concerns
- If you are aware of a potential school threat, whether spoken, written or posted on social media, contact police immediately
- Using the Buckeye police online tip platform, you can report potential school threats with the option of submitting screenshots and/or remaining anonymous
