Buckeye's Prepared... Are You?

The Preparedness Division of the Fire Department is initiating a program encouraging residents to be aware of and prepared in the case of an emergency or disaster in our city.

This program equips you with the knowledge and tools to enhance your family's disaster readiness, covering preparedness, protection, response, mitigation and recovery. This program focuses on practical steps you can take at home and within your community to ensure you're self-sufficient for at least 72 hours during a disaster.

The Arizona Department of Emergency Management is focusing on three threat/hazard groups and threat/hazard types defined by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) using the toolkit Threat Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (THIRA):

Group  Hazard type
 Natural Power outage
 Technological Cyber terrorism
 Human caused Mass gatherings

Buckeye is focusing on two of the three threat/hazard groups (see below).

Our goal is to educate and inform you on how to prepare for each of these types of disasters, and discuss how the city and Fire Department are also preparing.

Natural Disasters

Natural Disaster emergencies can consist of monsoon storms, flooding, power outages, dust storms, hail and other natural phenomenon that can impact you without notice. Buckeye went through the process to become a “Storm Ready” city and established weather stations in our Emergency Operations Center and Police Dispatch building to have a 24/7 monitoring when natural disasters may strike.

Things to Consider

Is your family ready? Do you have a plan in case you are without power for more than 24 hours? Do you have an escape plan in case of a flood? Where will you stay if your home must be evacuated? Is your home in a flood plain? These are realistic scenarios for our community.

Human Caused Emergencies

Unfortunately, one of the most common human caused emergencies is an active shooter at mass gatherings, events, schools, businesses, churches and any populated location.

What is the city of Buckeye doing to prepare for these situations?

  • We have adopted and kept current an Emergency Operations Plan for the city, Mayor and Council to follow during emergencies
  • All of our Fire Department staff are outfitted with critical personal protective equipment
  • Training with local police department on active shooter scenarios
  • Implemented a drone program with assists with TVA (Threat Vulnerability Assessment) which is done prior and during an event
  • We define a unified command at all events held in the city of Buckeye with a Fire and Police Threat Liaison Officer
  • Run-Hide-Fight active shooter training for businesses
